- Learn about the Clarify system
The Clarify Home Light Therapy system makes targeted, precision, Narrow Band UVB therapy convenient for you in the comfort of your home or even while traveling. Once you order your Clarify System and we receive a prescription, a CarePartner will reach out to you. Together, we begin your personalized education and treatment program. CarePartners help to enhance your understanding of phototherapy, your specific chronic skin condition and your treatment. CarePartners provide support and guidance, fostering safe and well-monitored home treatments as prescribed by your physician.
- Determine if it’s right for you
Home-based, self-administered care is not for everyone. It takes some planning and dedication to your treatment. Ask yourself these simple questions and if they are all “yes”, then Clarify is most likely a good fit for you.
- Have you been diagnosed with a skin condition that can be treated with phototherapy?
- Can you dedicate some time in your day for your treatments?
- Are you at ease with following directions, and if needed, reaching out to a CarePartner to ask some clarifying questions?
- Do you feel comfortable using a smartphone?
- Treatment may take several months and does not result in a cure. Setting realistic expectations for yourself, with the help of your physician, is a must. Are you willing to commit to the months of home phototherapy that may be needed?
- Obtain a prescription and receive your home Clarify System
Your Clarify journey begins with contacting your doctor to determine if you may be a good candidate. When scheduling an appointment, we recommend requesting an evaluation for home UVB therapy. If your physician is very familiar with your situation, he or she may be comfortable prescribing Clarify Home Light Therapy immediately. Should you need assistance, we’re happy to reach out to your physician on your behalf. If you do not have a doctor, we can also help to find a physician.
- Meet a CarePartner and prepare for your first treatment
You’ll be contacted by a Clarify CarePartner once we receive your doctor’s prescription, and we’ll keep you informed every step of the way. A Clarify password unlocks your personalized features within the app and a light therapy training program begins immediately— on your schedule. By the time your system arrives, you’ll be ready for your first self-treatment. Many people feel confident performing the first treatment independently. Others prefer the first treatment to be performed with a CarePartner phone appointment. We’ll follow-up the next day. Thereafter, most people need to contact CarePartners only on occasion, but we’ll continue to monitor and reach out to you periodically to support your care.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Clarify System
- How do I know if I am a good candidate for the Clarify Home Light Therapy System?
People who have psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema or other chronic skin condition that respond to light therapy are potential candidates for our service. Those with relatively small, scattered areas of involvement or who want additional control for problem areas when taking combination therapies are ideally suited to Clarify Home Light Therapy.
Our handheld, targeted device is designed to deliver a precise dose to affected areas and minimize treatment of unaffected skin. The total surface area for each treatment is a square with each side measuring about 2 inches. Treatments may require from seconds to minutes to deliver depending on your skin color, diagnosis and the stage of your therapy.
You must be able to reach treatment areas or have someone who can help you. Familiarity with smartphones helps with the initial system set up, but is not necessary. CarePartners are here to help you.
- What are the benefits of home treatment versus in-clinic care?
Home treatment can be done any time of day and according to your personal schedule. If you need to change to a later time of day, you can! Your Clarify device is also very compact and easy to take with you when traveling. Sometimes Clarify home therapy is prescribed in addition to in-clinic phototherapy.
- Can I combine light therapy with my other medications?
Your prescribing physician will determine if you have any contraindications to light therapy or need dose adjustments to account for your medications. Clarify CarePartners are also very familiar with treatments associated with your skin condition. They will work together with you and your physician to ensure optimal treatment safety and efficacy.
- What are the risks of phototherapy?
Although the safety features and targeted nature of the handheld helps to minimize unwanted side effects, phototherapy does come with some risks. The most common short-term side effects are tanning, hyperpigmentation, skin texture changes, and in some rare instances, scar formation. These changes can often be alleviated or prevented with careful, observant care. Increased incidence of skin cancers in patients who have received NB-UVB therapy has not yet been established; however, few large studies have been done looking at the long-term effects of NB-UVB in your skin condition. As a result, the risks and benefits must be weighed by you and your physician. Chronic exposure to UV can damage eyes. Thus, it is important to wear safety eyewear during each treatment session.
- Are there contraindications to phototherapy?
Although there are few absolute contraindications to phototherapy, such as history of light sensitivity and genetic skin cancer conditions, relative contraindications include history of skin cancer and poor response to phototherapy. Risks of treatment should be discussed with your physician, especially if you have lighter skin, are taking a medication associated with sun-sensitivity, and/or are taking immunosuppressive agents (such as azathioprine and cyclosporine) with markedly increased risk of UV-related skin cancer.
- How long is the treatment time?
Treatments may require from seconds to minutes to deliver depending on your skin color, diagnosis and the stage of your therapy. As treatment progresses, dosage is often increased to speed healing, which adds to overall treatment time. Those with relatively small, scattered areas of involvement or who want additional control for problem areas when taking combination therapies are ideally suited to Clarify Home Light Therapy.
- How do I obtain a prescription?
We recommend contacting your doctor to determine if you may be a good candidate. If you do not have a doctor, we can also help you to find a prescribing physician.
- What if my skin condition does not improve with home light therapy?
Unfortunately, no treatment is effective for all patients. Together, you and your doctor can decide the best course of action if it is determined you do not respond to phototherapy.
- Has this device been cleared by the FDA and what are the indications for use?
Yes! The Clarify Home Light Therapy system received FDA clearance on May 23, 2017. It is an Ultraviolet Light Emitting Medical Device intended for use in localized phototherapeutic treatment of dermatologic conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis (eczema), seborrheic dermatitis and leukoderma on all skin types (I-VI).
- Will my health care insurance pay for the Clarify Home Light Therapy System?
Many insurers offer reimbursement for home phototherapy equipment, depending on the diagnosis, medical history, and individual coverage policies. Since the Clarify System is new, no specific coverage policies have been established for our technology, and there is no history of acceptance or rejection of submitted claims.
We believe strongly in the clinical and economic benefits of our technology, and UVB treatment is universally accepted as effective in treating many chronic skin diseases. We will certainly make our case for coverage with public and private health care plans, but at this early stage we can’t predict whether or when the Clarify System will be covered. We will keep you posted on reimbursement progress through our website.
